We are a service company

I know this is not scientifically proved; it is just a thought that crossed my mind in class today

The moment a product-based company states "We are a solutions/services company" will signal you the moment that company thinks has lost (or will lost) its niche.

I can't recall any example of a product-based company that has successfully transformed itself in a solutions/services company. Can you?

Update Nov 2nd, 2009
Jaime Cuesta and some other friends reminded me that IBM is a good example of a company that has transformed itself from a product-based company into a services/solutions company. I agree, it is a good example.

MBA friends

Agree at the moment of creating your company, and put it on the papers, how the company is going to be valuated at the moment any of the partners want to get its share.

You know what money can do to families; imagine what can do to executive MBA friends that decide to setup a company!!!!

Entrepreneur and borrowing?

I learnt today something that to me is contra-intuitive.

As an entrepreneur wannabe I always thought that if you can build your own company based only on your money that's the best way to do it.

I always thought that adding debt to the company (borrowing) was something to be avoided, if possible. Simply because in a start-up, in fact in any company, the fix monthly payments and the interest payments associated to borrowing was something to be avoided, again, if possible.

Now I know I was wrong. I just learned that some borrowing (debt) is good for a company, even for a start-up.

What I'm now up to learning is what the best level of debt is for a company.
